Mouldon Hill- A new country park for North Swindon

Swindon has five Country Parks but only three in close proximity to the town, Lydiard to the west, Coate Water to the south and Stanton Park on the north east. In the late 1980’s, the opportunity to provide another was taken in the planning of the Haydon Sector major expansion area, strategically linking Mouldon Hill to serve the proposed residential areas.

The addition of 10,000 new houses (approx. 28,000 people) would clearly put further demands on the current sites and further strain the town’s road infrastructure. Mouldon Hill offers the chance of developing a ‘doorstep’ facility that would relieve these problems and provide a readily accessible park to pedestrians and cyclists from the adjacent new housing areas. This was the basis behind the Haydon Section 106 agreements that have seen the connection of the Sect.38 cycleway network into the park, the creation of a road access into the park, the delivery of a railway embankment in preparation for a new track and the implementation of an amenity lake as an attraction. The Cricklade Railway Society have an approval to run track to the edge of Mouldon Hill, Sustrans have a national cycle route approved within the site and the Wilts and Berks Canal Trust have made steady progress on the restoration of the disused canal. The site presents opportunities to continue working with these organisations to complete the vision of a new Country Park as a gateway to the Cricklade Country Way
